SEO with Ease - Small Business Website Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of formatting your small business website in a way that is "friendly" to search engines. Why would you want to be friendly with these search engines? Because they determine where your website is placed in search results - and how people find you!

Although SEO is not an exact science and the inner workings are a bit of a mystery, there are certain agreed upon practices that can help or hurt your rankings. As a general rule, you should choose keywords that you think describe your site. Write these down so that you can refer to them easily. Your keyword(s) will be the main focus of your site and should be used in descriptions and titles wherever possible.

Although Flash animation is nice to look at (usually), it is like poison if over used. Search engines don't know how to read flash - they just see a blank page. So if the first page of a website is 100% flash the search engine thinks there is nothing there and will skip the rest! This goes the same for regular pages on a website - if everything is flash animation, it is virtually the same as if the page is blank. The best use of flash is as a sparing addition to your site - part of a page, not the entire page.

The URL or web address of every page on your site should make sense. It's best to have readable words that are easy for humans to remember rather than numbers or code like "http://website.com/datekm087jn.php" or "http://website.com/?q&hgnb%20%20.html" These types of URLs are not liked by people or search engines!

Meta tags are hidden identifiers or descriptions that are only read by search engines. They should describe only what is on the page and avoid repetition as this can actually be harmful.

Page titles are displayed in the upper menu bar at the very top of the web browser. Having a page title that is descriptive of the page content is a bonus with search engines.

Images can't be read by search engines. They are essentially a blank square on your website. The only thing that search engines understand is text. This is why images should always have an alternate tag. Search engines are able to read the alternate tag and then they know what kind of content is on your site.

Hyperlinks help your users to navigate through your website. The best kind of links are made of descriptive text instead of the old fashioned <click here> type of links. Search engines read "click here" and they have no idea what the link is for!

Sitemaps are a list of all the possible pages on your website. Not only do they help your site visitors to see what's available for browsing, they also help search engines find all of your pages and make sure that nothing is left out.
