How to never get spam

"The only people who don't get spam are those with no email addresses, no computers, who live on a desert island and communicate by banging on rocks (or writing on paper, it's hard to tell which is more out of fashion)"  Spam is a fact of life, right?  Just par for the course.

Well... no, not really. 

A couple basic things to know about spam:

  • It's not about you.  No one is targeting you, and no matter how apt or timely that sale on muscle relaxants, discount viagra, free houses or wayward African princes may seem, the fact is that message is one of 200 billion messages sent per day.  You read that right.
  • Ok, it's sort of about you.  Spammers build their email lists a number of ways, and contrary to popular belief visiting illicit sites isn't the way they got your address.  My pious aunt Mildred never visited a scat porn site in her life, but judging by the number the solicitations for them she gets, one could easily be forgiven for thinking otherwise.  The way spammers do get your address is much simpler.  They just read it off your website.  Easy.  
  • They also grab your address from those handy "reply to all" messages people forward to 800 of their closest friends, or they just guess ("info@" or "contact@" address are so common there's no need to check if they're real before sending spam to them).
  • 97% of worldwide email traffic is spam.  Yes, the chips are stacked against you.  But don't throw
